THE TIGER
                            ©2005 Dan Bar-el

When tigers roam within my home
It matters not to me one jot
   If they travelled from Bengal
Or all the way from Senegal
When tigers loom in any room
The urgent facts concern their snacks
In this regard one can’t be hasty
You want to know what they find tasty
   So devote yourself to observations
   That reveal the tigers’ inclinations

If they thirst for food that’s dry
Scholars are what they should try.

If love of ham should be a factor
Then I suggest you serve an actor

If they rush to food acidic
Lead them to a movie critic

If greasy fare is sought the most
I then suggest a talk show host

If they yearn for food morose
A poet should fulfil that post

But if they beg for something lighter
   Offer them a children’s writer

When tigers roam within my home
It matters not to me one jot
If they have stripes or polka dots
What matters most is that I am able
To offer them a buffet table.
What tiger’s want I’ll give with glee
As long as what they want ain’t me.
